Albert Hall apartment in Queen Victoria’s cultural realm
NEXT to the Royal Albert Hall and with views overlooking Hyde Park, an impressive three-bedroom duplex apartment is for sale. It has one of the grandest entrance halls for an apartment of its calibre – and an even grander heritage. New to the market with Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea specialist Maskells, with a guide price of £7 million, the home at Albert Hall Mansions has royal links.
The apartment, which measures around 3,500 sq ft, is on Kensington Gore, a U-shaped thoroughfare that was redeveloped in the late 19th century to commemorate Prince Albert. It is said to be one of a number of park-facing apartments in the building purchased by the Queen as gifts for her cousins.
This is the site of the former Gore House, the residence of William Wilberforce – a key figure in the abolition of the Atlantic slave trade. The house was acquired by Prince Albert’s Great Exhibition Royal Commission as part of plans to create a cultural quarter known as Albertopolis.
Originally destined to be the Central Hall of Arts and Sciences, the name was changed to the Royal Albert Hall in memory of Prince Albert, who died in 1861, with the mansion block also taking the Prince’s name.
Designed in 1878 by Richard Norman Shaw, Albert Hall Mansions were seen as marking the beginning of a new era in city living. Built for the highest echelons of society, the apartments reflected the size of large houses, to attract those that required space and luxury in the heart of the city.
The apartment is entered via a corridor with a sweeping staircase that has the look and feel of a country manor.
On the ground floor are two reception rooms, both with 3.5m-high ceilings, as well as open fireplaces and views on to Hyde Park. Numerous original period features have been retained throughout the apartment.
There is an open-plan kitchen with sliding doors leading to a more informal reception/family room, plus a bedroom with its own front door onto the street, that could be used as independent accommodation for older children and relatives, or for staff.
The principal bedroom suite, complete with a walk-in wardrobe, occupies most of the first floor; there is also a guest bedroom suite and a further bedroom and bathroom on this level.
