Three-bed duplex overlooking Hyde Park is being positioned around a claimed Queen Victoria connection.

A three-bed duplex overlooking Hyde Park and Royal Albert Hall has come to market at £7mn via RBKC agency Maskells, with the marketing leaning on a claimed royal link.

According to local legend, a number of the park-facing apartments within Albert Hall Mansions were acquired by Queen Victoria and gifted to members of her extended family following the completion of Royal Albert Hall, built in memory of Prince Albert.

The hidden association “could add a priceless value”, said the firm, alongside the more obvious draws of scale and position.

The duplex runs to around 3,500 sq ft over two floors, with dual-aspect reception space looking straight onto Hyde Park. Ceiling heights are in the region of 3.5 metres, and a good amount of period detail remains in place.

The red-brick mansion block itself is entered via a long corridor with a sweeping staircase that, according to Maskells, has the “look and feel of a country manor”.

Dating back to 1878 and designed by Richard Norman Shaw, Albert Hall Mansions is often cited as one of the earlier purpose-built mansion blocks of its kind, aimed at delivering house-like proportions for a late Victorian elite. The scheme formed part of the wider development of Albertopolis, the cultural quarter that emerged in the wake of the Great Exhibition.

The site’s provenance also goes back further. Gore House, once home to William Wilberforce, stood here before being acquired by the Royal Commission as part of plans to reshape the area.
