Amenities at the 18th-century home that’s near Hyde Park include a roof terrace, a gym, a theater and private parking
Location: South Kensington, London
Price: £2.75 million (US$3.7 million)
With its pastel pink exterior and clusters of wisteria vines, this charming three-bedroom period home in the middle of Petersham Mews stands out from its neighbors on the peaceful cobblestone street in London’s South Kensington neighborhood.
Built in the late 1800s, the home was first used as the coach house and stable.
Today, “the house is roughly double the size of the original, which would have been to accommodate servants and horses for the owner of the main house on Elvaston Place to the rear,” said listing agent Jamie Hope of Maskells. “The basement was dug out to enlarge the house from its original format and two additional floors and a mansard roof extension was added.”
The home’s layout is spread across four floors. The ground floor houses a spacious reception room that leads on to an open-plan kitchen and dining area. A separate laundry room is also connected to the kitchen and living area.
A set of winding stairs leads down to the lower ground floor, which features a gym and a theater. The latter performs double duty as an office or study area.
“The current owners refurbished the house in recent years and it is immaculately presented,” Hope said.
The first floor has two renovated en suite bedrooms. One of them features sliding double doors onto a private outdoor terrace. The primary bedroom suite occupies the entire second floor and features a separate outdoor roof terrace, which offers far-reaching views across Kensington.
“The roof terrace is lovely, and it’s very unusual for a mews house.” Hope said. “The house is also wider than average, which is sought after due to the limitations in architecture in London. Width is a rarity.”
Stats
This house has 2,279 square feet and there are three bedrooms, three full bathrooms and one partial bathroom.
Amenities
Hope notes that Mews houses typically suffer from a lack of outside space and London restrictions prohibit parking outside of them. But this property includes private parking.
“This is a rarity, as is the access to the nearby communal gardens,” Hope said. “Owners have the right to apply for a key to Queens Gate Gardens, which is situated directly behind the property. There is usually a charge of a few hundred pounds a year as the residents pay for the upkeep.”
Neighborhood Notes
Petersham Mews is located in the heart of South Kensington, “a stone’s throw away from Hyde Park,” Hope said. “The South Kensington neighborhood has over 150 years of magnificent history,” Hope said. “The Victorians developed most of the area with Prince Albert creating a cultural quarter in the form of the Royal Albert Hall, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Science Museum and the Natural History Museum, which were established between the 1850s and the 1870s. The area plays host to some of the finest restaurants, schools and shops that London has to offer and the transport links in the area are all excellent.”
The Gloucester Road underground station (with access to the Piccadilly, Circle and District train lines) is about a five-minute walk from the property.
